Family Story

Archer Elisah and Emily Jones

We are descendants of Archer Elisah and Emily Jones. The best estimates from the Census records I have reviewed indicated that he was born around 1855 in either Cumberland County or Prince Edwards County in Farmville, Virginia. Archer Elisah Jones was a slave and worked as a laborer thru out the East coast and the South. His date of death is unknown; however, records indicated that he was deceased before 1910.

Elisah married his wife Emily who was described as a mulatto about 1877. They had 10 children; however, information regarding the first 6 is not available. We only know about four children who we are descendants.

Kate Jones Johnson was the oldest of the four children

John Jones was the oldest of the 3 boys.

Elisah Lee Jones was the middle son.

Jasper Wells Jones was the youngest child.

The 1870 and 1910 censuses indicated that Emily Jones lived in Farmville, VA and worked as a domestic and cook. She could not read or write and she rented a house on 294 Ely Street with her 3 sons, Jasper, Elisah and John. She passed away sometime in June 1936 and was buried in Cumberland County, Virginia.

Children

Kate Jones Johnson

Kate Jones Johnson was born either 1878 or 1883 in Farmville, VA. She married William Johnson December 28, 1898. Their marriage certificate indicated that she was 20 and William was 21. We think that perhaps Kate was actually 15 and William 16. Kate and William had 6 children, however, we know of only 4, Arthur Johnson, Lizy M. Johnson, Burnell and Jasper Johnson. William Johnson was a laborer on the Steam railroad. Kate Johnson, at age 73, passed away August 5, 1957 at her home located on 806 Hill Street, Farmville, VA. She was buried at Odd Fellow Cemetery in Farmville, VA.

John Jones

John Jones was born in 1885 in Farmville, VA. and was married in 1903. His wife name is unknown. John is known to have one son by name of Sampson who lived in New York. In 1910, John was 25 and living at home with his mother even though he had been married for 7 years and not divorced. He was working as a stemmer in a tobacco factory in Farmville, VA. His date of death was unknown; however, thru family interviews, it was suggested that he was killed in West Virginia in a fight.

Elisah Lee Jones

Elisah Lee Jones (my great grandfather) was born March 4, 1890 or 1891 in Farmville, VA. He was married to Lizzie J. Thornton, September 4, 1916. They had 6 children, Janet Lee Jones, Emily Jones, James Archer Jones (my father), John Jones, Margaret Jones, and Helen Jones. Elisah migrated to Baltimore, Md. and around 1927 his family joined him. He was a steel worker at Sparrows Point, Md. He passed away after a long illness at age 48 in Baltimore in 1948.

Jasper Wells Jones

Jasper Wells Jones was born March 4, 1893 in Farmville, VA. He was married 3 times. His third wife, Elizabeth Washington, bore him 2 sons, Peter Jasper Jones and John Paul Jones. Jasper Wells was a plasterer and taught masonry skills at the all Negro St. Emma Military Academy for Boys in Virginia. He also worked in Harlem, NY, Chicago, Ill., Baltimore, Md., and Washington, DC. He passed away at age 75 in Farmville, Va. in May 1968.
